Through the historic lanes of Thrissur Old Fort area
Thrissur was a well-planned fortified town, centered around the Thekkinkad Maidanam and the Sree Vadakkunnathan temple. The streets encircling religious, residential, and public buildings radially branch out from this core, along with natural terrain in organic patterns. The town consciously crafts a cultural space in which all streets lead to a central spirit at the center.
Over time, the buildings and streetscapes of this Cultural Capital is transforming into a concrete jungle, undermining the historic roots of the city. Mapping the city and its built elements can prepare a heritage time map for the city, a home-based resource — a heritage map of the city, in our modest attempt.
The workshop, invited architecture students, young professionals, and heritage enthusiasts to engage in field surveys, expert interactions, and the preparation of a Heritage Map. Objectives included the identification of heritage structures, documentation for preservation, and raising public awareness. Special emphasis was placed on equipping participants with hands-on skills in architectural heritage listing techniques within a fun and collaborative learning environment.
This initiative reaffirms INTACH Thrissur’s commitment to safeguarding Thrissur’s built heritage and sensitizing future generations to its enduring cultural value.
