World Environment Day 2021

5 June 2021

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the INTACH Thrissur Chapter organized the Tree Mapping Release event at Thekkinkad – Vadakkumnathan Devaswom Maidanam, a landmark green space in Thrissur. The event, held on June 5, aimed to raise awareness about the ecological and cultural importance of trees in urban and heritage landscapes.

The programme began with a welcome address by Ar. Vinod Kumar M.M., Convener of INTACH Thrissur, followed by a presentation on the Tree Mapping initiative by coordinator Arunthathi, with inputs from Ar. Vinod Kumar, Dr. N.T. Sasidharan, and Dr. P.S. Easa. The mapping project documents significant tree species in the area, emphasizing native biodiversity, cultural associations, and ecological value.

Expert remarks were shared by Dr. Sasidharan and Dr. Easa, who highlighted the importance of scientific tree documentation in conservation planning and public engagement. A group discussion followed, focusing on the broader implications of urban tree mapping and the need for community participation in preserving green heritage.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ar. Surya Prasanth, Co-Convener of INTACH Thrissur. The initiative serves as a valuable step toward integrating environmental conservation with heritage stewardship in Thrissur.

This brochure, developed over the course of more than a year, highlights the rich biodiversity of the Maidan and serves as a critical tool for its conservation and landscape study. The initiative aims to support the ongoing efforts to revamp and preserve this historic space for future generations.
