Introduction

The Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) accorded recognition as an Institute of Excellence by the Government of India, is a non-profit organization founded in 1984 to involve its members in protecting and conserving India’s vast natural, built and cultural heritage. It has over 200 Chapters spread across all states and Union Territories, and works with Local, State and Central governments, besides numerous other institutions.

INTACH undertakes a wide range of initiatives including the conservation and restoration of Natural, Cultural, and Built Heritage, Heritage Management, awareness programmes, heritage walks, and educational outreach in schools and colleges. These activities aim to foster public appreciation and engagement with India’s rich historical legacy.

INTACH Thrissur Chapter

With the Thrissur Chapter, INTACH has now established it’s 6th Chapter in Kerala — after Kasaragod, Calicut, Cochin, Kollam and Trivandrum.

The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Thrissur Chapter, established on World Heritage Day in 2013, is the sixth chapter in Kerala. INTACH Thrissur Building, a milestone in our ongoing commitment to heritage conservation and cultural preservation was inaugurated on 8th September, 2021. INTACH Thrissur undertakes a wide range of initiatives including the conservation and restoration of Natural, Cultural, and Built Heritage, Heritage Management, awareness programmes, heritage walks, and educational outreach in schools and colleges. These activities aim to foster public appreciation and engagement with India’s rich historical legacy.

INTACH Thrissur Chapter works to preserve and promote the cultural, architectural, and natural heritage of Thrissur. Through awareness programs, conservation initiatives, and community engagement, the chapter fosters appreciation for local traditions and heritage among citizens, especially youth, ensuring sustainable protection of Thrissur’s unique historical and cultural identity. What exactly is heritage? Is any old building considered heritage?

Heritage is the legacy of cultural, historical, and architectural value passed down through generations. It includes both tangible elements like buildings, monuments, and landscapes, and intangible aspects such as traditions, crafts, and oral histories.
Not every old building is considered heritage. For a structure to be classified as heritage, it should hold historical, cultural, architectural, or social significance.

Anyone with a passion for heritage, culture, and conservation can join INTACH Thrissur! You don’t need to be an architect, historian, or archaeologist to be a part of our team. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds who are interested in preserving and promoting our rich heritage.
