Creating a Living Archive: Listing Thrissur’s Architectural Heritage
In 2019, INTACH Thrissur Chapter launched an ambitious heritage mapping initiative aimed at documenting and preserving the architectural and cultural legacy of Thrissur Town. The first phase of the project successfully produced a detailed heritage map of the Fort area—an iconic zone rich in historical, religious, and civic landmarks. Recognizing the need for a deeper understanding and protection of these assets, INTACH Thrissur has now extended the initiative into a comprehensive listing and inventory project.
This second phase focuses on collecting detailed data on each mapped heritage structure, including architectural features, historical background, present condition, and ownership details. The objective is to create an accessible and well-structured archival database that can serve as a foundational reference for future conservation efforts, academic research, and heritage-sensitive urban planning.
Through extensive fieldwork and stakeholder engagement, approximately 480 structures of diverse typologies—ranging from temples, churches, and mosques to colonial-era bungalows, public buildings, and vernacular houses—were identified. Of these, nearly 300 have already been documented and inventoried. The project is a significant step toward safeguarding Thrissur’s rich built heritage and instilling awareness among citizens and authorities about the importance of protecting the city’s unique historical identity.
